Subaru’s new Impreza could possibly come in a hatchback only form to compete with other hatches such as the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. Following a trend set by the Subaru B5-TPH concept car, which blends styling influences from an SUV with those of a hatch, the new Impreza is sure to prove controversial when it makes its appearance at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.
The new car’s design will allow for both three and five door variants and will still include potent WRX and STi versions. The familiar four-cylinder boxer engine will carry over but with some significant revisions to meet the latest emission standards in Japan. Power for the base model Impreza will be 170hp (123kW) and will top out at 300hp (224kW) for the high-performance STi version. A first for the model will be a four-cylinder turbodiesel engine for the European market. All cars will carry AWD running gear as standard.
This design concept is in stark contrast to the Impreza’s main rival, the Mitsubishi Lancer which will retain its familiar sedan shape. How will this pan out for Subaru? Only time will tell.
