Overview
The C 30 CDI AMG is not only the first Diesel made by AMG, but also the first ever diesel super sports car on the market.
In 2002 Mercedes-AMG unveiled a world premiere to the public when introducing the then new C 30 CDI AMG. This car not only was the first Diesel made by AMG, but actually the world's first diesel-powered super sports car. For the first time ever, a vehicle combined the driving dynamics and power of an AMG high-performance machine with the economy of a diesel. This was possible only by the totally new direct-injection turbodiesel engine with common-rail technology.
Performance
The heart of the C 30 CDI AMG is the then newly developed AMG 3.0-litre V5 CDI engine with a common-rail high-pressure direct injection and turbocharger which boasts a fuel injection pressure of 1350 bar.With an overall displacement of 2950 cc the powerplant develops 228 hp at 3800 rpm and reaches a peak torque of 398 lb-ft between 2000 and 2500 rpm. These specifications allow the C 30 CDI AMG and C 30 CDI AMG Sports Coupe to sprint from standstill to 60 mph in just 6.6 seconds (Wagon in 6.8 seconds) and reach a top speed of 155 mph (Wagon 152 mph). Despite its unbelievable performance, the C 30 CDI models all are extremely economical with a mileage of 31 mpg (Wagon: 29.8 mpg).
To cool the high-performance engine sufficiently, the technicians at Mercedes-AMG developed an advanced charge air cooling system with air/water heat exchanger and separate low-temperature circuit. The innovative technique cools down the compressed intake air before it enters the combustion chambers by two low-temperature radiators that are located in the front section of the car. The biggest advantage of this system is the fact that the maximum output and torque can be guaranteed in all conditions, even when the outside temperature is high.
Another novelty is the logic-controlled adjustment of the turbine geometry to ensure that the charge pressure of the supercharger is built up more quickly at low revs while delivering more power at higher engine speeds. For that purpose, the engine electronics operate the turbocharger via a microcomputer to control charge pressure at every time.
All quality standards of Mercedes-Benz like durability, reliability and everyday usability are delivered by the AMG 3.0-litre V5 engine. The engineers at Mercedes-AMG have completely overhauled the engine mechanics. In the course of the remodeling they equipped the engine with a modified drive shaft, a new crank mechanism, reinforced pistons with oil injection cooling for the piston crowns, optimised cylinder head connections and a more efficient oil pump. Moreover, they plugged in a newly designed heating system, something essential in every diesel engine that especially proves its worth in cold weather since it offers higher pre-heating temperatures with shorter preheating times and precisely calculated after-heating.
Exterior
Not only the performance of the C 30 CDI models is unbelievable, but also their exterior is. All three models, the C 30 CDI AMG Saloon, Sports Coupe and the Wagon, feature the established AMG bodystyling. Equipped with a muscular front apron with integrated fog lamps and big air inlets, and the specific AMG rear apron - which in the case of the C 30 CDI AMG Sports Coupe has an additional black insert - that surrounds the chromed twin-tailpipe the car offers a really distinctive look. In addition, the Saloon and Wagon models feature typical AMG side skirts which are painted in body colour. The low clearance is caused by the AMG sports suspension which was taken over from the C 32 AMG and even underlines the sportiness of the top-of-the-line models.
For optimal road contact and perfect handling in all situations, the high-performance diesel models are equipped with sterling-silver-painted AMG light-alloy wheels in twin-spoke design which are mounted with wide 225/45 ZR 17 tires at the front and 245/40 ZR 17 at the rear. Besides guaranteeing tremendous roadholding and a strikingly dynamic appearance, the huge rims also fulfill another purpose - effective brake cooling. This got necessary since the AMG cars feature the same high-performance braking system as the supercharged V6 sister models. The internally ventilated brake discs measure 13.58 in at the front and 11.81 in at the rear and ensure both the shortest possible stopping distances and impressive durability. To fit the increased performance of the diesel vehicles both the suspension and the brakes had to be adapted. For that purpose, the C 30 CDI AMGs feature strengthened stabilizers on axles and retuned spring/damper elements.
Additionally, all electronic devices like Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Anti Skid Control (ASR), Brake Assist (BAS) and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) have been adapted to the new output.
With all these modifications, the sportier set up and the enhanced appearance, it is not a big deal to distinguish the C 30 CDI AMG from other C-Class models.
Interior
The unbelievable performance of the C 30 CDI AMG models is not only obvious in the striking exterior of the car, but is also omnipresent inside. The established, electrically adjustable AMG sports seats offer optimised lateral support under all driving conditions, whether cruising through the countryside or showing its true performance capabilities on the autobahn. The seats are upholstered in finest leather, and match the ergonomic leather AMG sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons and topstitching in a contrasting colour (Saloon and Wagon only). The AMG selector lever features a new-shape with leather appointments and a "C 30" aluminum inlay, matching the ample aluminum trim elements in the centre console and door panels. Additional sportiness is added by the new AMG instrument cluster with a speedometer scale up to 200 mph. It is divided into intervals of 20 mph instead of the used 10 mph steps, and features red needles and a new lettering style.
Despite being sports-tuned, the typical degree of exclusivity and luxury is offered as well. Contributing to this, the C 30 CDI AMG is equipped with the THERMATIC automatic climate control, which offers a constant and comfortable climate during journeys as well as an armrest with stowage compartment.
Technology
One of the biggest tasks is and always was to bring all the power produced by the C 30 CDI AMG to the street such that the cars do not only look sporty, but also confirm their performance printed on paper on the road. For this purpose, the C 30 CDI AMG models are all equipped with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT five-speed automatic transmission. The newly adapted transmission combines the dynamic attributes of manual gearshift with the convenience of an automatic. In combination with the electronic torque converter lock-up from first gear the diesel models deliver an extremely direct driving experience with smooth gear changes and a high level of agility across all speed ranges.
The transmission offers a number of other technical features as well. By pulling the selector lever to the left, AMG SPEEDSHIFT immediately selects the best gear for maximum acceleration, all depending on the current speed. When cornering at speed the transmission remains reliably in the gear already engaged, avoiding the possibility of any load alteration effect.
